The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process which introduces adults to the Catholic faith and prepares them to receive the Sacraments of Initiation should they decide to join the Catholic Church. The RCIA is a non-threatening, no-strings-attached program which begins with an Inquiry period, where questions about God, faith, and Christian/Catholic beliefs are discussed in an accepting environment. There are three other periods involved with the process, through which individuals can progress if they feel God is leading them to join the Church: the period of the Catechumenate, which is a time of thorough study of the Catholic faith, the period of Purification and Enlightenment, which corresponds with Lent and is a time to concentrate on prayer and conversion, and finally the period of Mystagogy (or “unlocking the mysteries”) which occurs AFTER a person joins the Church at the Easter Vigil, the most solemn Mass of the year celebrated the night before Easter Sunday. At Our Lady of Fatima, classes are held on Thursdays in the school library from 7:00-8:30pm, beginning the Thursday after Labor Day each year and ending on Pentecost Sunday of the next calendar year.
The RCIA is open to those who have never been baptized, those who were baptized Catholic as infants but never received any other sacraments, or those from Protestant traditions who would like to join us in the Catholic Church. Additionally, children aged 7 to about 12 who are in one of the situations described above also are part of the Rite of Christian Initiation, which is adapted for children. A special class for these children will be held in conjunction with the Religious Education Department, with the class being held at 9:00AM on Sunday mornings. Additionally, we also offer a joint class for junior high/high school teens with Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church in Jackson. Adults, teens and children will also occasionally be part of special celebrations and prayers during Sunday Mass.
If you have any questions about the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or need more information about any of the three classes we offer (Adults, Teens or Children), please feel free to contact RCIA Director Betsy Koval at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the parish office at 764-2088 ext 105.
